Whatnot Seller Fees in 2027: The Complete Breakdown (With Worked Examples)

TL;DR

Whatnot charges sellers an 8% base commission on the item sale price only (not on shipping or taxes), plus a payment processing fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction in the US, Canada, and Australia. Since September 2026, Whatnot uses a tiered structure that automatically lowers your commission as your four-week sales grow, reaching as low as 3% for high-volume sellers. EU and UK rates differ. These two fees are your only deductions.

What Fees Does Whatnot Charge Sellers?

Whatnot deducts exactly two fees from every sale: a commission on the item price, and a payment processing fee on the full transaction. There are no listing fees, no subscription costs, and no commission on shipping amounts or buyer taxes.

Knowing both numbers before you price an item is the difference between a profitable show and running the numbers afterward and wincing.

Fee 1: The Commission (8% Base, Lower as You Grow)

Whatnot charges commission only on the item sale price, not on the total order value. This distinction matters. If you sell a $10 item with $4.99 shipping and $0.85 in tax, your commission is calculated on $10 only, giving you $0.80 at 8%. On another platform charging 6% on the full $15.84 order, you would pay $0.95 despite the lower advertised rate. Whatnot calls this GMV-based commission and it applies across all markets (as of October 2026, confirmed by the official Whatnot help page and blog.teamwhatnot.com).

The New Tiered Commission Structure (Effective September 21, 2026)

This is the biggest change to Whatnot fees in the platform's history. Since September 21, 2026, your commission rate is not fixed at 8% forever. Your total sales across all formats (Live, Marketplace, and Shop) over the previous four weeks determine your tier for the next four weeks. The tier resets automatically. There is nothing to apply for and nothing to enroll in.

US base tier: 8% for sellers with under $15,000 in four-week sales.

Once you clear the $15,000 threshold, you move to Tier 1 and your rate drops. Rates continue falling as sales reach higher thresholds. At the $500,000 four-week tier, publicly listed rates by category are (as of October 2026, per help.whatnot.com):

CategoryCommission at $500k+ Four-Week Sales
Sports and Trading Card Games6.5%
Other Collectibles5%
Fashion4.5%
Other4%
Coins3.5-4%

Custom rates below 3% are available for the highest-volume sellers through dedicated account managers and are not part of the public tier structure.

The full tier table with every threshold and intermediate rate is published at help.whatnot.com. Check it before major pricing decisions, as tiers and thresholds can update.

UK and EU Commission

In the UK and EU (France, Germany, and other supported markets), the base commission is 6.67% + VAT on the item price. With 20% VAT applied to the commission itself, the effective rate for UK sellers is approximately 8%. The tiered structure applies across all markets, with the same principle: sell more over four weeks, unlock a lower rate for the next four weeks (as of October 2026, blog.teamwhatnot.com UK blog).

Fee 2: Payment Processing

The processing fee applies to the full transaction value, meaning the item price plus buyer-paid shipping plus buyer taxes. This is separate from commission.

US, Canada, Australia: 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction (as of October 2026, help.whatnot.com)

EU and UK: 2.42% + EUR/GBP 0.25 per transaction, plus VAT (as of October 2026, help.whatnot.com)

The $0.30 flat component hits harder on low-priced items. On a $5 item, that flat $0.30 alone equals 6% of the sale price in added cost. On a $50 item, it is 0.6%. This is the strongest argument for bundling cheap items rather than selling them one by one.

Worked Examples: US Base Tier

These examples use the 8% base commission and 2.9% + $0.30 processing for a US seller at the base tier. Commission applies to item price only. Processing applies to the full order (item + shipping + tax). Taxes shown are illustrative only; actual buyer tax varies by state and buyer location.

Item PriceShippingTax (illustrative)Commission (8%)Processing (2.9% + $0.30)Total FeesNet Payout
$10$5$1.25$0.80$0.77$1.57$8.43
$25$5$2.00$2.00$1.10$3.10$21.90
$50$8$3.50$4.00$1.97$5.97$44.03
$100$10$7.00$8.00$3.71$11.71$88.29
$200$10$14.00$16.00$6.68$22.68$177.32

Reading this table: On a $50 item, Whatnot takes $5.97 total. You keep $44.03 before your shipping label cost. On a $200 item, the combined effective rate falls to approximately 11.3% of item price.

EU Worked Example (France)

For a seller in France selling a vintage jacket for EUR 50, with EUR 5 shipping and EUR 4.25 buyer VAT collected by Whatnot:

The exact VAT rate on fees depends on your country of registration. Verify current rates at help.whatnot.com before pricing high-value inventory.

From Chris (@cotevintage): I sell vintage Ralph Lauren, Levi's and jewelry on Whatnot as @cotevintage from France, 4.8 stars. Recent shows have run 1,400 to 2,100 EUR with 30 to 50 buyers each, and repeat buyers make up a big share of every show.

Pricing Strategy: Protect Your Margin at Every Price Point

At the US base tier, your combined fees run approximately 10-12% of item price depending on the order. This is your pricing floor before cost of goods and shipping label.

Three rules that actually change how much you keep:

  1. Price individual items above $10. The $0.30 flat processing fee becomes a meaningful chunk of revenue below this point. Below $10, bundle items instead.
  2. Use auction format to protect margins on high-demand items. A live auction floors your price at what buyers are willing to pay that day. You do not leave money on the table when demand is high.
  3. Track your four-week rolling total. Reaching the $15,000 Tier 1 threshold cuts your commission automatically. Knowing how close you are before a show changes whether you push volume or protect per-unit margin.

eBay Live published its own fee schedule in July 2026, and rates vary by category. When you compare, check what each fee is calculated on: Whatnot's commission applies to the item price only, while eBay generally calculates on the total sale including shipping. Check eBay's official fee page for current rates.

The Whatnot Seller Hub shows revenue and orders per show. What it does not give you: net payout after all fees per show, top buyers ranked by spend, per-minute sales rate during your live, or a comparison across your last several shows.

Without those numbers, you are pricing your next show by feel.

FAQ

How much does Whatnot take from sellers in the US?

At the base tier, Whatnot takes 8% of the item sale price as commission, plus 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction for payment processing calculated on the full order including shipping and taxes. The combined effective rate on most mid-range items is 10-12% of item price. The commission rate automatically drops once your four-week rolling sales clear $15,000, with continued reductions at higher thresholds reaching as low as 3% for the top tiers.

Does Whatnot charge fees on shipping?

No. The 8% commission applies to the item sale price only, not to shipping costs or buyer taxes. The payment processing fee (2.9% + $0.30 in the US) is calculated on the full transaction including shipping and taxes, but commission is explicitly excluded from shipping and tax amounts. This is what Whatnot calls GMV-based commission.

Is Whatnot cheaper than eBay for sellers?

It depends on your category and volume. Whatnot's 8% base commission applies to the item price only, not shipping or tax, and drops automatically once your four-week sales pass $15,000. eBay's standard final value fee for most categories is 13.6% of the total sale plus a per-order fee, and eBay Live has its own category-based rates. Compare both on your real average order before choosing.

When do I get paid by Whatnot?

Earnings are available for payout within 4 hours once the item is delivered and the buyer window closes. The bank transfer to your account takes 1 to 3 business days depending on your market. Canadian sellers are moving to 1-2 business days from October 2026. An Early Payout Program exists for qualifying sellers; current eligibility is at help.whatnot.com.

Are there any upfront fees to sell on Whatnot?

No. There are no listing fees and no subscription required to sell on Whatnot. You pay commission and processing only when an item sells, and both are deducted automatically from your payout.

Does Whatnot take fees on giveaways or buyer tips?

No on both counts. Giveaways generate no revenue, so no commission applies. Buyer tips go 100% to the seller, with no Whatnot commission deducted (as of October 2026, help.whatnot.com).

How do I calculate my Whatnot profit?

Net profit = (item price x 0.92) minus your processing fee (approximately 3% of full order + $0.30) minus your cost of goods minus your shipping label cost. Use the worked examples table above as a quick reference, and cross-check against your Seller Hub statements for the actual figures from each show.

What is the Whatnot commission for fashion sellers in France?

French sellers pay 6.67% + VAT on the item price at the base tier. With 20% French VAT applied to the fee itself, the effective rate is approximately 8%. The tiered structure applies in all EU markets: higher four-week sales unlock lower rates automatically with no enrollment required (as of October 2026, blog.teamwhatnot.com UK/EU blog).

How does the new tiered commission work exactly?

Whatnot totals your sales across Live, Marketplace, and Shop over the previous four weeks. That total places you in a tier. That tier sets your commission rate by category for the following four weeks. There is no application process. Tier 1 in the US starts at $15,000 in four-week sales. The complete tier table by category and threshold is at help.whatnot.com.

What happened to the Premier Shop commission discount?

The 10% commission discount for Premier Shop sellers is being removed on November 1, 2026. From that date, commission rates are determined entirely by four-week sales volume. Sellers at lower sales volumes who benefited from the Premier Shop discount may see their rate increase when it ends. Higher-volume sellers will benefit from the tiered structure, which can produce larger savings.
